The method is used to examine the dentin abrasion by toothpaste in combination with a manual toothbrush in accordance with ISO 11609 ( ADA laboratory procedures , John J.
Hefferren Phd. ) .
Furthermore, the method can be used to determine the cleaning efficiency of plaque removal with a
toothbrush. The artificial teeth are preparing
with plaque (see drying of artificial plaque / staining test apparatus) . The samples are cleaned in the brush machine. After brushing plaque removal is analyzed with an image analyzing system
(see image capture of the remote plaque / Image analysis of Stain Removal) .
The device is equipped with eight holders for holding the test specimens.
The brushing frequency and number of brushing cycles can be adjusted. The toothbrushes are attached in such a way that they move in alternating directions at an angle of 5° over the clamped test
specimens. A fixed force is applied to the brush while it is constantly immersed in a toothpaste mixture.
