The ISO 20126 toothbrush standard includes the impact resistance test for the handle of manual toothbrushes. The toothbrush is clamped in a fixture. The toothbrush is subjected to an energy load of 2.75 joules by a pendulum applied to the toothbrush head. The test determines whether the toothbrush breaks. In the event of a break, the height of the pendulum is measured using an angle sensor, and this height can be used to calculate the absorbed fracture energy. The standard specifies a fracture energy of > 0.8 joules. The impact resistance tester has a fixture for clamping the toothbrush in accordance with the standard. The pendulum is released manually. The tester is enclosed in an acrylic glass enclosure to catch splintered plastic pieces from the toothbrush being tested.
